Happy Holi-day

The #Tropenmuseum new object of the month is an Indian water spout.

Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and others across the world spray water with spouts and guns like this while celebrating the spring festival of Holi. They suck up the water in the buckets and basins round about, dyed with coloured powder, and squirt each other wet. They also throw the brightly tinted powder at each other, so that after a while everyone outside is drenched and vividly coloured.

Holi, which falls on 1 March this year, is a festival that celebrates the victory of good, light, knowledge, justice and truth.

Bronze, iron, wood. India, 20th century.

Thanks,
GerardM
